What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a housing option that individuals may choose when they need extra assistance but are still able to live healthy and active lives. Many seniors want to continue living independently, even though they require additional help. When this is the case, an assisted living community can be an excellent solution.

Assisted living typically refers to a retirement community or senior living home where residents receive help with daily living tasks. These tasks may include bathing, dressing, medication management, eating, and access to necessary medical care. These communities are licensed through the state as RCFEs (Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly).

Prior to the opening of Vivante, the opportunities for assisted living in Costa Mesa were limited for the discerning local population. While assisted living or independent living communities can be appropriate for seniors who are still healthy enough to live on their own but may require extra help, there are senior apartments in Costa Mesa that may be appropriate for more independent residents.

  • “This place is such a gift. My mom-in-law has been living here and the staff and fellow residents are so loving and kind. The place is gorgeous and the food and activities are reminiscent of being on a cruise ship. The quality of the food is absolutely amazing- my favorite is filet mignon Fridays. "

    Susan M
  • “The time had come to move my Mom from her home of 50 years to an assisted living community. It was not an easy task and I’d like to think that I did my due-diligence by researching ten communities between Costa Mesa to San Clemente."

    Leslie G
  • “This place was amazing. The staff has incredible customer service and treat the residents like they are their family. I would’ve never expected that my parents would’ve been ok to live anywhere but their house but they felt like this was an all-inclusive resort vacation.“

There are many factors that contribute to the decision to move into an assisted living community.
One of the most common factors is loneliness. Perhaps a senior has lost their spouse and is feeling isolated in their own home. This can, of course, lead to depression and a lack of motivation.
Maybe a senior is having trouble carrying out everyday living tasks, including bathing, dressing, personal care, showering, and taking care of the household.
Perhaps meal preparation has become more difficult, and eating consistent and nutritious meals has become a challenge. Perhaps grocery shopping has become too difficult.
Sometimes, medications can be forgotten, which can become dangerous for individuals who rely on them regularly.
It’s not uncommon for residents to move to an assisted living facility after a fall when there are serious safety issues that living alone can cause.
Many of our residents move to Vivante before they require assisted living because they want to enjoy all of the incredible amenities and activities offered within the community. Seniors don’t want to spend their retired years bogged down with the everyday tasks of managing a home or feeling isolated.

For an additional fee, further assistance with daily living can be added at any time.

Many senior living communities only offer a handful of amenities, but Vivante strives to always go above and beyond. The Vivante living cost incorporates full access to all of these amenities at a cost on par with the rest of the market.
California is one of the most pet-friendly states in terms of assisted living, senior living, senior housing, and assisted living facilities. Many retirement communities, including Vivante, welcome elderly pet owners and their beloved animal companions.
The policy for pets can vary by community. At Vivante, we offer dog walking and also have a dog park available for our canine residents.
We haven’t forgotten about our feline family members and welcome residents with cats, too! We understand that pets are a part of the family, and they are welcome to move in with their owners when they choose Vivante.

For seniors who are suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, it can be highly beneficial to move into a memory care program within an assisted living community. Some of the benefits of memory care offers are 24/7 care and support, ensuring the resident’s safety, and not having to wait for a scheduled caregiver to arrive and provide care for them.
Additionally, socialization, which many people suffering from dementia severely lack, can greatly improve quality of life. Memory care also has specially trained staff and programming tailored to the needs of people living with these diseases. Highly trained caregivers and program directors offer compassionate care for residents and can be an enormous source of support for family members.
If couples want to stay together, there are several ways that can be structured. The couple can either live in a private room within The Shores, or the resident struggling with memory-impairing conditions can live in The Shores, and their spouse or partner can live in the assisted living section of Vivante, which is on the same campus. This allows couples to stay together and see each other daily. They can enjoy meals and activities together within the secure surroundings of Vivante and The Shores.
Historically, Costa Mesa, CA assisted living options have been very limited. Few communities exist, and those that do are older and out of date. Many have not been updated for more than 20 years! With an affluent and discerning population, Costa Mesa, CA senior living communities and independent living facilities have not been acceptable options for many of the community residents, forcing seniors to stay in their homes with in-home care or participate in respite care.
When seniors decide to stay home with care instead of moving into an assisted living community, they miss out on many benefits. One of these benefits is social interaction and the creation of new friendships.
Many residents who move to Vivante from their homes report that they have much more energy, decreased symptoms of depression, and are excited about each day at Vivante. They have developed new, exciting friendships and relationships. They have learned new skills and have discovered new passions. As the owners of Vivante saw the success of Vivante on the Coast and the way it began changing the lives of Orange County seniors, they decided to create another coastal senior living community. Luxury senior living communities simply didn’t exist at this time, and given the median home price of nearly $2.8 million dollars, the opportunity was there to expand Vivante’s reach and create an ultra-high-end senior living community right in the heart of Fashion Island.
There are several factors to consider when choosing an assisted living community. During your research, be sure to visit each one several times during various times of the day. Ask to enjoy a meal in their restaurant or dining room. If possible, speak with some of the current residents and inquire about what their experience has been like living in that community. Are there activities taking place? Are there parties, happy hours, and live entertainment to enjoy? Are family members visiting and included in the daily happenings of the community? Speak with some of the caregivers and staff to see how they enjoy working there.
Many communities also offer a respite stay, which is a temporary stay in a furnished apartment for 30 days or more. This type of respite stay gives potential residents the opportunity to fully experience the community before committing to moving in full-time. They are able to sample the food over an extended period of time and meet some of the current residents living in the community.
Individuals can also participate in daily activities, entertainment, and outings to see if they’re compatible with the lifestyle offered by the community.
Another great source of information can be reviews on Yelp and other platforms. Oftentimes, family members or residents use these sites as a way to share information about their experiences with the community.
Moving to an assisted living community can feel like a monumental step for people who have lived on their own for so many years. These care facilities are located in single-family residences. Typically, they have ten or fewer residents living within them.
These homes can be an affordable option for many seniors, as they include all of the added care that residents need. These homes are great for residents who need a higher level of care and personalized attention on a daily basis.
Residential home care includes all meals and necessary care but does not offer the amenities that an assisted living community would provide. This is also a good choice for residents who prefer a smaller, home-like environment instead of an apartment or suite within a larger community.
